New Technology Allows for Location Tracking
with Minimal Hardware Investment
LEBANON, N.H. & BOSTON—(BUSINESS WIRE)—March 4, 2004—
Geographic Data Technology, Inc., a developer of premier map databases,
and TeleType Co. have teamed to turn GPS/Java enabled phones into tracking
devices that can locate family members, high profile executives, fleet
vehicles, and security and service personnel. Based on TeleType's award-winning
GIS tracking and navigation software and GDT's industry-standard digital
maps, this new mobile tracking solution can also serve as a high-end
mobile navigator combining street, air and marine information.
The TeleType GPS PhoneTracker represents the type of
innovative technology recently recognized by the CNET Editor's Choice
Award for TeleType's WorldNavigator GPS technology for PDAs and laptops.
By combining Global Positioning System (GPS) technology with communication
and location transmission into the GPS/Java enabled phone, TeleType
offers customers an economical and easy-to-use system that can simultaneously
track multiple vehicles.
The PhoneTracker uses a GPS/Java enabled phone with
a public IP reserved for data transmission so that it is secure, fast
and reliable. Because no computer is required in the vehicle, the PhoneTracker
can track entire fleets of vehicles with minimal hardware investment
per vehicle. Each GPS/Java phone enabled vehicle can be tracked by anyone
on the road or from a central tracking station with an Internet enabled
Pocket PC, laptop or desktop PC.
"TeleType's innovative solution allows customers
to easily and cost-effectively keep track of both assets and employees,"
said Dana Fenner, Location-Based Services Market Director for GDT. "Companies
are no longer required to install costly hardware systems in vehicles.
Now, they can use a GPS/Java enabled phone, which many commercial fleets
already use. This puts GPS tracking technology into the hands of many
more businesses and consumers."
GDT's Dynamap(R)/Transportation street and address information
provides a detailed map backdrop and enables the system to accurately
pinpoint locations. Compiled from a vast network of sources, the Dynamap/Transportation
map data provides comprehensive street and address coverage, highly
accurate one-way and restricted turn information, accurate representation
of limited access highways, preferred routing names, and exit point
layers to offer superb performance within the TeleType PhoneTracker.
"The accuracy and reliability of GDT's street and
address data has been a key factor in the development of many of our
tracking solutions," said Ed Friedman, President of TeleType. "The
GDT map database provided the level of information we needed to enable
the GPS/Java phone with location intelligence."
