Interstate Routing

Using the TeleType GPS program and maps to create a route from “20 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116” to “535 Connecticut Avenue, Norwalk, CT 06854”

(There are two ways to create the route.  Using the first method, this sample would require 16MB memory.  The second method only needs 2.8MB memory.  Therefore, we recommend you to use the second method to save internal memory. If you have sufficient storage space directly on your handheld computer, you can feel free to use Method 1.  Now let’s see how this works.)

Method 1: (16 MB memory, shows street map for 2 states)

(1) INSTALL PROGRAM and INSTALL GPS MAPS from the CD to your hard drive into any location you like (if using the TeleType GPS install wizard, the maps will be copied to the folder under C:\Program Files\Gps). In this example, we need the street maps for Massachusetts (MA) and Connecticut (CT), and the Highway Only maps for both of these states.

(2) Double click the item called GPS found on your desktop. A rough base map (lots of city names and dots) will show up.  Find the city you will be starting from on the U.S. map, which is automatically loaded when you start TeleType GPS program.

If it is not loaded, then you need to select Places.ttm, which is in the C:\WINDOWS directory.  If you don’t see the town/city you need, press “View”, choose “Show Preference”, choose “City/Road” tag, and select the “Show All Cities” option when looking for your starting point.

Note: If you choose to "Show all Cities" be sure to turn off that feature once you find the city of choice. Leaving the checkbox on will cause the display to refresh slowly. Be assured that you will see all cities as you zoom closer, the only reason for showing all cities is for use when driving in rural areas and for pre-trip planning.

Check Show All Cities option for displaying all towns/cities on the map.

(3) To load state street maps, press “File” menu and click “Load Maps”.  Choose the state maps you would like to see.  In this example, you need to choose all files under both 25_ma and 09_ct folders for displaying the MA and CT maps.

Load state maps from the CD or your hard drive.

Use Select All (Control A) to load an entire state at one time.
(available for laptops and desktop systems, not Windows CE).

You also need to load both MA and CT highway maps for maximizing the efficiency of route creation. In other words, if you don’t load the highways separately, the program will tend to use streets rather than highways to accomplish the route.

Click “Load Maps” from the “File” menu.  Choose the folder “highways_only” and choose the files you need.  In this example, you need to choose both ct_hy.ttm and ma_hy.ttm files for displaying the MA and CT highway.

(4) Press “Route” menu and choose “New” for the pop up window.  Select From option, type the address “20 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116” on this pop up window, then press “Find Address”.  Select the appropriate address from the choices given by the search and then press “SAVE-OK” to use the address and in addition record the address for future use.  Next time you need an address, which has already been saved, rather than retype the address, press the button “History Address” and select the address you need.

Select the appropriate address from the results
provided by the search, then press “SAVE-OK”.

Ready to enter the address for To option.

Follow the same procedure for typing the address “535 Connecticut Avenue, Norwalk, CT 06854” on the blank fields for To option.

Enter the destination address for To option.

Note: It is not necessary to have complete address information in order to search. For example, you can search without entering Zip code or Place.

Then press “Route” for creating the route on the map. (This process may take a couple of minutes).

Press “Route” button when you are satisfied with addresses listed in From and To fields.

(5) Now a pink line will display the Door-to-Door Route on your map. For a text version with complete details, see the file called: curPathRst.txt under C:\Program Files\Gps\ for desktop/laptop computer systems (or click the file curPathRst.txt under My Documents for Pocket PC).

  Note:

Method 2: (only 2.8 MB memory, state street maps for origin and destination with highway only maps for majority of the state.)

(3) In our example, 20 Park Plaza is located in Boston.  Therefore, we click the city “Boston” on the map.  In the pop up window, press “Load Detailed Maps” to load the detailed street map for Boston.

Tip: Remember, in order to find or route from an address, street maps for the desired area must be loaded.

Tap on Boston to load detailed maps of the area.

Zoom in to the Boston area to see more detail.

(4) If you don’t know where the city is located, try using the “Find” feature under the “Tools” menu.  Using the Find window to enter the desired city or town in the “Place” field, and double click the appropriate place from the choices given by the search.  This will automatically designate the city as a waypoint (so it will be noted with a bullseye marker) on the map.

In this example, we type Norwalk in the “Place” field and double click the Norwalk, CT option.  The city Norwalk will be a waypoint on the map.

Search for Norwalk city.

Norwalk is marked as waypoint.

(5) Zoom In the map for “Norwalk” to get the surrounding towns, which are close to Norwalk. Zoom in to almost 2.5-mile scale (see next screen shot), click the surrounding town “Westport” on the map.  In the pop up window, press “Load Detailed Maps” to load the detailed street map for Norwalk. Now you can see the detail street map of waypoint city “Norwalk, CT”.

Tap on Westport to load detailed maps of the area.

Waypoint (Norwalk city) is covered in the detail map.

(6) Now you need to load both MA and CT highway maps for creating a route.

In the “File” menu, click “Load Maps”. Choose the folder “highways_only” and choose the files you need.  In this example, you need to choose both ct_hy.ttm and ma_hy.ttm files for displaying the MA and CT highways.

Load highway maps from the CD, your hard drive, or directly on the hand held.

Load CT and MA highway maps.
