Can I use DeLorme Tripmate
and Earthmate GPS receivers?
Yes, but
these receivers are not recommended.
We don't recommend DeLorme receivers since they have no backup battery they often take long periods of time to lock in. We especially discourage the use of DeLorme receivers for use in aviation. See specific information below on how to initialize the DeLorme receivers.
Is there anything special about
the DeLorme Earthmate setup?
Yes, you need to be sure to plug in the receiver BEFORE activating the
TeleType GPS program. Use a fresh set of batteries, take the receiver
and your computer outside. After activation of the TeleType GPS program
use the GPS Tools menu, Serial/IO Tab, to set serial communications
at 9600 baud (TeleType GPS software defaults to 4800 baud). Then select
the serial I/O tab, press Pause, wait 5 seconds, then press Continue.
Note: when using DeLorme receivers the TeleType GPS program will not
display satellite information such as strength and position. The program
does however support tracking of your position with the DeLorme receivers.
Also a serial driver is required. You can find it here.
It seems like
my Earthmate is not initializing with TeleType GPS and yet I can use
it with my DeLorme software, what's wrong?
Plug in the DeLorme receiver into
your computer. Activate the TeleType GPS program, select Tools, Serial
I/O. If you see "garbage" being displayed,as strange as it
may sound, the initialization is actually fine. If the initialization
has failed to occur you will see the string "Eartha" within
the "garbage" text.
What you should see is once in a while, as the "garbage" or binary code
is being displayed, is the TeleType GPS message <Not Logged In>.
That means that we understood that it is data is originating from the DeLorme Earthmate and TeleType GPS is just waiting for the appropriate code indicating that the Earthmate has locked in into the satellites. Also note that since the Earthmate data is binary TeleType GPS can not display the strength of satellites bars on the status tab.
Use the Pause/Continue button to see the data better.
