VERIFYING COMMUNICATIONS ON POCKET PC

back to last page

How can I verify that my Pocket PC is receiving GPS signals?
Follow the appropriate set of instructions below to determine whether your Pocket PC computer is communicating properly to the GPS receiver. This process will help you to determine the serial port being used by the GPS.

Using Pocket PC 2003

The Pocket PC 2003 version may lead into dialing a number to check on the connection under the Start > Settings > Connections > Connections window.

To avoid this issue, an application named TTY can be used to perform the test between the GPS receiver and the Pocket PC.  The software and instructions on how to use it are listed below.

Download TTY

Once you have successfully downloaded TTY on your Pocket PC, follow these steps.

1. Go to File > Settings.
2. Choose COM1 for the COM PORT option.
3. Set the Baud Rate to "4800".
4. Set the Parity option to "None".
5. Set the Flow Control option to "RTS/CTS".
6. Set the Data Bits option to "8".
7. Set the Stop Bits option to "1".
7. Click on OK.

If the terminal does not generate any script, repeat Step 2 by selecting another COM Port.  Also, make sure that the settings from Steps 3-7 are the same.  Usually the GPS receiver can be found at any port, from 1 through 8.

d. If you receive an error such as IR send or receive failed, this is indicative of the fact that the PDA system registries have been scrambled and you must perform a factory reset. (Take care to backup important data as it will be lost during factory reset process).
e. Do not Restore your machine or you will have exactly the same problem as you had before the reset. You must manually re-install all programs and data.
